Good to know before you buy

  • Plan the mirror light before tiling

A lit mirror or wall lights beside it need cable points in the wall. Fix the mirror position and mark the points before the tiles go up.

  • Light from the side for grooming

Light only from above casts shadows under the eyes and chin. Light at the sides of the mirror, or a lit mirror, gives an even face.

  • Match the rating to the zone

Anything inside the shower needs IP65. Near the basin, IP44 is the minimum. Further away, standard indoor lights are fine.

  • Choose fittings that are easy to clean

Smooth, closed downlights stay clean longer than open or deep-set designs in a steamy room.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Indoor fittings in wet zones

IP20 lights near the shower fail early and are unsafe. Match the rating to the zone.

  • Light only from above

It casts shadows under the eyes and chin. Add light at the mirror.

  • Cool light at the mirror

6000K makes skin look grey. Use 4000K for grooming.

  • No exhaust or ventilation plan

Steam settles on fittings and mirrors. Good ventilation keeps both lasting longer.

  • Exposed switches near water

Keep switches outside the wet zone, or use the switch built into a lit mirror.
