Questions people ask

COB uses one dense chip for a single focused beam. SMD spreads many small chips for wider, softer light.

It depends on the room size, ceiling height and beam. Bring your floor plan and we'll work it out.

Colours look closer to daylight. Wood, skin and fabric look the way they really are.

Warm 3000K for living rooms and bedrooms, neutral 4000K for kitchens.

Recessed looks cleaner but needs a false ceiling. Surface spots work on any ceiling.

A deep-set spot with a grille or honeycomb, so the light source stays hidden and glare is very low.

Yes, with a dimmable driver and a matching dimmer. Ask us which models support it.

3W to 5W for accents and niches, higher wattages for high ceilings or general light.

They run warm at the back, which is why good spots have a heat sink. Leave space above them in the false ceiling.

Good to know before you buy

  • Get the cut-out right

Every recessed spot has a cut-out size, from 28mm on the Broca to 50mm on the Birra. Cut the false ceiling to match, or the trim won't sit flush. If you're replacing old spots, measure the existing hole first.

  • CRI 80 or CRI 90?

CRI 80 is fine for general light. Choose CRI 90 or above for art, wardrobes, kitchens and anywhere colour matters. Roos and Birra are CRI 90+.

  • Choose the trim colour with the ceiling

White trims disappear into white ceilings. Black trims look sharp in dark or wooden ceilings. Copper, brass and rose gold trims become a design detail of their own.

  • Mind the glare

In bedrooms and living rooms, deep-set or pinhole spots keep the light source out of sight when you look up.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Putting spots in a grid like downlights

Spotlights are for features. Laid out in a grid, they leave bright circles on the floor and dark walls. Place them over what you want to show.

  • Choosing a wide beam for art

A 100° beam spreads too far to pick out a painting. Use 30° to 38° for art and niches.

  • Placing spots too close to the wall

Too close and the light scallops sharply down the wall. About 300mm to 600mm from the wall gives a smoother wash.

  • Ignoring the trim finish

The trim is the only part you see. Match it to the ceiling, or make it a deliberate detail.

Bring your ceiling plan. We'll mark where each spot goes.
