Elevation lights are outdoor fittings that light the front of a building at night, using wall washers, up-down lights and ground spikes. We stock IP65 MASCON wall washers from 18W, compact up-down lights from 2W and adjustable spike lights, at our Periyamedu showroom.

Wall washer, up-down light or spike?

  1. Wall washer

A long bar that floods a whole wall or column with light.

  2. Up-down light

Two beams on a pillar or a narrow wall.

  3. Spike

Aims up from the ground at trees, columns or texture.

Front elevation lighting ideas

  • Columns

A narrow wall washer at the base of each one.

  • Stone or textured walls

Light from close below, so the texture shows.

  • Long boundary walls

    Up-down lights at even spacing.

  • Entrance

A brighter accent than the rest, so guests know where to walk.

Wall lights that throw one beam up and one down, making two lines of light on the wall.

Yes. Most homes run them from dusk to about midnight on a timer.

Yes. Surface wall lights and spikes need only a cable point, which an electrician can add.

Usually one at the base of each column. Tall columns over two floors may need a narrower 15° beam to reach the top.

Good to know before you buy

  • Light the architecture, not the whole wall

The best elevations light a few features well: the columns, the entrance, one textured wall. Flooding everything evenly makes a building look flat.

  • Hide the source

Place wall washers at the base of a wall, behind a planter or a ledge, so people see the lit surface and not the fitting.

  • Plan the cable points with the architect

Elevation lights need cable points at specific spots on the facade and in the ground. Mark them on the elevation drawing before plastering and cladding.

  • Use high CRI on stone and wood

The Winx wall washer and Brioni spike are CRI 90+, so stone, brick and wood keep their real colour after dark.

Common mistakes to avoid

One bright floodlight flattens every detail of the facade. Several smaller lights on chosen features give depth.

Uplights aimed past a ledge can shine straight into the rooms above. Aim them at the wall, with the beam stopping below the windows.

A wall washer in full view during the day can spoil a clean elevation. Tuck it behind a planter or into a ledge.

Use 15° for tall columns and 45° for wider walls, consistently across the front.

Send us a photo of your elevation. We'll mark where each light goes.
